Application of EDTA Chelating Agent in Agricultural Fertilizer

 

EDTA series products are mainly used as chelating agents in agricultural fertilizers. Their core function is to improve the utilization efficiency of micronutrients in fertilizers by combining with metal ions to form stable water-soluble complexes.

1. Improve the effectiveness of nutrients

EDTA combines with micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, and manganese to form stable chelates, preventing these elements from combining with anions in the soil to form precipitation. For example, traditional calcium fertilizers (such as calcium nitrate) easily react with phosphate to form insoluble substances, while EDTA chelated calcium can avoid this problem and be directly absorbed by crops through the root system or leaves. This property is particularly suitable for soil environments rich in phosphorus or with high pH values, and can improve fertilizer utilization efficiency.

2. Promote crop absorption of micronutrients

EDTA chelated micronutrients have the characteristics of high water solubility and non-dissociation, which can directly enter the plant body through crop transpiration or cell sap flow without going through a complex ion exchange process.

3. Enhance crop stress resistance and quality

EDTA chelated fertilizers indirectly enhance the stress resistance of crops by providing balanced nutrition. For example:

Disease and drought resistance: Calcium strengthens the cell wall structure and reduces the risk of disease and insect pest infection; magnesium promotes chlorophyll synthesis and enhances photosynthesis efficiency.

Improve fruit quality: Copper and manganese can activate a variety of enzymes, promote protein synthesis and sugar conversion, make the fruit brighter in color and increase its sweetness.

Alleviate environmental stress: EDTA-chelated calcium and magnesium can neutralize the toxicity of excessive aluminum, sodium and other ions in the soil, and improve the damage of salinization or acidic soil to crops.

In addition, EDTA chelators has other functions. For example, it can be mixed with fertilizers or pesticides without reducing fertilizer efficiency or causing precipitation; it can reduce the risk of heavy metal residues in the soil.
